Western Sydney Airport Transfers: 7 Things to Know Before Your First Flight

Western Sydney International Airport (Nancy-Bird Walton) opens to passengers on 25 October 2026, and there is no train to it yet. Until the Sydney Metro line is finished, you will get to the terminal by car on the toll-free M12, by bus, or by pre-booked private transfer. If you want the least stressful option, a chauffeur who tracks your flight and meets you at the door is hard to beat, especially for early starts and late arrivals. Here are the seven things to know before your first flight.

1. When does Western Sydney Airport open, and who flies first?

The first passenger flights leave on 25 October 2026. Jetstar operates the opening flight, an Airbus A320 to the Gold Coast departing at 11am. Air New Zealand begins flying to Auckland on 26 October, and Singapore Airlines starts daily flights to Singapore Changi on 23 November.

From launch, Jetstar plans up to 14 flights a week to Melbourne, four to the Gold Coast and three to Brisbane. QantasLink joins on 28 March 2027 with services to Melbourne and Brisbane. The airport is designed for up to 10 million passengers a year in its first phase, so expect the schedule to grow.

2. Is there a train to Western Sydney Airport?

Not at opening. The Sydney Metro line to the airport was meant to open at the same time but is running late. Once it is finished, the 23 km driverless metro will run between St Marys and the Aerotropolis, with a journey of about 15 minutes from St Marys to the airport.

In the meantime, the NSW Government has set up a free interim bus between St Marys Station and the terminal. For your first trips, plan on roads and buses rather than rail. Check the airport’s official website and Transport for NSW for the latest on the metro.

3. How do you drive to Western Sydney Airport?

The M12 Motorway connects the airport precinct to the M7 and is toll-free. That is the main route for most people travelling from Sydney’s north-west and west. Because the airport is at Badgerys Creek, flights out in the morning peak can also mean driving against the heaviest city-bound traffic, which depends on where you start from.

Whatever route you take, allow extra time on your first few trips. A new airport means new signage, new roads and a lot of curious travellers.

4. Where do you park or get dropped off?

More than 6,000 car spaces are being built, operated by Wilson Parking, including covered, accessible and EV charging bays. Long-stay parking is a five-minute shuttle from the terminal. Short pick-up and drop-off zones are also provided at the terminal, and the airport has said online parking bookings would open in the second half of 2026, so check before you leave home.

The catch with driving yourself is the wait at the other end. You park, shuttle, check in, and then repeat the process when you land, often tired and carrying luggage. A chauffeur removes all of that.

5. What are the bus options?

There are two layers of bus service at opening:

  • WSI Link: a free interim bus between St Marys Station and the terminal, running every 30 minutes until the metro starts. Reported hours are roughly 4.30am to midnight, with later finishes on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • Permanent routes: new services linking the airport to Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown, Mount Druitt and Leppington, running about 5am to 10pm every 30 minutes.

Buses are good value, but they stop running at night and mean changing at St Marys if you are coming by train. Anyone with young children, a lot of luggage or a very early or late flight will want a backup.

6. Does a 24-hour airport change how you should travel?

Yes. Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport restricts most aircraft movements between 11pm and 6am. Western Sydney International has no curfew and operates around the clock, which opens the door to red-eye departures and very early arrivals.

The flights may be at any hour, but the public transport timetables are not. If your flight lands at 1am or departs at 5am, the buses and trains described above may not be running. This is where pre-booked ground transport matters most.

7. Is a private chauffeur transfer worth it?

For many travellers, yes. Here is how the options compare in the first months of operation:
